Winter is a time when we are more susceptible to illness. The damp, cold weather and fluctuations in temperature puts more stress on our system, opening the door for us to fall victim to an illness.
Surviving and enjoying the winter takes knowing just what is needed to help keep us healthy and recover from specific illnesses. Obviously it is always better to prevent then treat, however, life is complicated and sometimes no amount of preventing can keep away an acute illness. Maybe our body really needs to do some cleansing, and we need to honor its decision. Once the illness has taken hold, it is now a matter of doing what ever it takes to recover quickly and efficiently. Even an acute illness, if left too long, can develop into something far more serious!
Lately my practice has been busy dealing with a wide variety of illnesses; sinus infections, head colds, chest colds, pneumonia, lots of gastric issues as well. The classic “stomach flu” isn’t a flu, since true influenza is a bronchial cough with body aches and a fever. The “stomach flu” is due to another virus or bacteria. Quite often I see this issue arise late fall due to an inability of an individual’s body to simply clear built up toxins. Spring and Fall are times the body wants to clean house, so to speak. Our body actually does want to keep us healthy, sometime though it can’t do its job because of restriction we have unwittingly placed on ourselves. Another thing that triggers the “stomach flu” is food borne contaminants, in other words, food poisoning! This one is much more common than we think and is often the reason we have a 24 hour gastric disturbance.
As we all know, with the constant changes in temperature and dampness we tend to see a lot of illnesses. High levels of mental and emotional stress will also put undue pressure on our immunity. Thus, now is the time to really boost up our immune system so that we can avoid a lot of these problems.
Many people like to add certain herbs that are becoming well known as healing herbs, such as echinacea, goldenseal and oregano. These are all highly beneficial when used appropriately and when needed. I do not recommend taking these daily as a prevention, since they are in crude chemical form similar to a drug and when over used can create symptoms or other problems. The time to use these herbs are when you feel yourself coming down with something, and to take it until your illness feels like it is finally resolving. If you want to take it as a prevention, the best way is to take it daily for 3 days to a week and then take the same amount of time off of it. So that it does not become a crutch!
There are a lot of different types of immune boosters on the market, learn to muscle test yourself and find the one that you feel really works for you. One of the easiest ways to boost your system when you start to feel “off” is by taking a high probiotic supplement once or twice a day.
If even after all your efforts you still come down with something, there are lots of ways to help support and heal yourself. Be sure to check out my Ultimate Wholistic Healing kit – Winter Survival! Winter Survival kit here!
The way I look at it, there is no reason to suffer needlessly. I quite often run in to people I know in the health care business who simply “leave the healing up to their life force, it will know what to do!” Well actually it does and it doesn’t! It needs our intellectual side to take over and actually take some time and effort to help ourselves.
It’s like to old joke about a severe storm and a flood which has left everyone stranded; there is one man who is sitting on his roof and a boat full of neighbors comes by and ask him to come down and join them, they will take him to safety and he says, “No, its okay, God will save me.” A helicopter comes by and throws down a rope to pull him to safety and he says, “No, its okay, God will save me.” etc. Eventually the man dies!
Sometimes we miss the signs, because we are too focused on someone else taking control of our lives, we have given our power away. Take back your power, own your health in every way, be self responsible, even though it takes a lot of effort, you will be rewarded!
Once you have gotten sick, take some time to find out what supportive methods work best for you and use them. Taking the time to know yourself even during an illness, will go a long way in creating inner strength of Self! Sometimes an illness is actually a healing crisis, and when we own it fully we resolve it forever!
I have compiled a new Ultimate Wholistic Healing kit, for just this purpose.
